Wildlife safari in Kenya with Safari Joe

If you know where to look, there is still treasure to be found in the heart of Africa

Safari Overview

This is a bespoke 10 day Wildlife and Cultural Safari taking in some of the highlights of Kenya,

including the glittering lakes of the Rift Valley and the rolling savannah of the Masai Mara.

Where you stay is a crucial part of the holiday and we have gone to great lengths to provide accommodation that provides extra comfort, character, convenience and value. Five star hotels won't feature on the agenda but our itinerary guarantees a greater degree of comfort after your day's effort. We will be staying in tented camps which provide twin or double beds and bedding, you can choose either to have shared or private bathroom facilities.

This is a tailor made safari suitable for all age groups, it is a gentle paced tour designed for people who enjoy the outdoors and want a relaxing trip packed with interest.

Day 1 London to Nairobi

After a daytime flight to Kenya, landing just as the African sun is setting will leave you with a tingle of excitement. The cool evening beckons as we meet you at the airport and whisk you away to our first luxury tented camp, nestled in the quiet leafy suburbs of Karen in Nairobi. Karibu Kenya! Welcome to Kenya!

Day 2 Sheldrick's Elephant Orphanage and Langata Giraffe Centre

A gentle introduction to Kenya as we spend a wonderful day enjoying some of the many special places around the quieter areas of Nairobi. This morning we visit Kazuri Beads to watch the local African ladies hand craft beautiful ceramic beads and hand made pottery. Then on to Sheldrick's Elephant Orphanage (as seen on BBC Elephant Diaries), to see the orphaned baby elephants and learn the story behind each one, giving us a little insight into these amazingly social mammals. After a picnic lunch we spend a leisurely afternoon at the Langata Giraffe Centre viewing the endangered Rothschild Giraffe and a great opportunity to get up close and personal with them!

Day 3 Journey via the Great Rift Valley to Nakuru

After breakfast it's time for us to roll up the safari vehicles tarps and buckle up as the adventure begins! Heading west, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind, we are soon climbing up the Great Rift Valley escarpment for breathtaking views. The Rift Valley, so immense it can be be seen from the moon! The scenery is amazing as we pass Mount Longonot, Lake Naivasha and Lake Elementeita before we arrive at our camp in Nakuru mid afternoon. Time to relax and enjoy some cold drinks as the sun goes down.

Day 4 Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya's two premier National Parks. This soda lake is fringed with thousands of pink flamingoes; rich areas of grassland, euphorbia and acacia forests surround the lake. The park also home to both black and white rhino's, lions and leopards, buffalo and waterbuck. We spend the day observing the amazing diversity of both animals and birdlife in this unique park, including a picnic lunch on our drive. After a most enjoyable day we head back to camp late afternoon, still time for a quick dip in the pool.

Day 5 Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha

A relaxed morning as we head to Lake Naivasha in time for lunch. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake whose shores are fringed with papyrus and yellow barked acacia trees and hippos frequent the shallows. Our accommodation is on the edge of the lake and home to Black & White Colobus Monkeys plus many species of birds including the african fish eagle, marabou storks, superb starlings and woodpeckers. During the afternoon you can wander and explore the beautiful lake side camp, relax around the pool, observe the birds and wildlife from under the shade of the giant yellow barked acacia trees or do a spot of shopping for souvenirs at the local Masai market next door. After the sun goes down we may be lucky to observe the hippos as they come out of the lake to feed.

Day 6 Crescent Island and Elsamere

We head off this morning to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary. The park where you can actually walk with the animals and often called Naivasha's best kept secret. It is a private game sanctuary situated on a peninsula of the lake; it is safe to wander as it is patrolled by local guides who will accompany us on a guided walk. During the afternoon we take a boat cruise along the lake edge to Elsamere for afternoon tea. Elsamere is the former homestead of the late Joy Adamson, who raised and released Elsa the Lioness, immortalised in the book and film, 'Born Free'. There is a short documentary on their incredible lives and then afternoon tea is served on the lawns, homemade lemonade, freshly baked quiches, cakes and puddings.

Day 7 Masai Mara

From Naivasha, for maybe the highlight of the safari, we head into the Masai Mara National Reserve for hopefully some of the best game viewing on earth and maybe catch the annual wildebeest migration (depending on the season) where millions of the unganely beasts move north from the Serengeti seeking lusher grass. Huge prides of lions can be found everywhere and elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in large numbers. There is a good chance of spotting the big five (lions, buffaloes, rhino, elephants, leopard). Birds can be seen in abundance, Eagles soaring high on a thermal, Vultures tearing at the leftovers on carcasses. Our tented camp is on the edge of the Reserve. During the hours of darkness the wildlife is at its most active, we sit around the campfire in the evenings, guarded by Masai warriors with their spears, under the clear starlit sky and listen to the calls of the wild.

Day 8 Masai Mara

Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for wildlife viewing and we take full advantage of this, the changing colours of the savannah at sunrise and sunset are also when the animals are most active, taking a rest during the heat of the day. As we game drive in the reserve we observe the vast range of animal and bird life. A colourful sight around this area is the Masai herdsmen, grazing their stock dressed in their red shukas (blankets) and ornate beads. We learn more about this interesting tribe when we visit a local Masai village. As the evening draws in the camp fire is lit, a sumptuous dinner is served and then the evening is spent relaxing around the hot embers of the fire.

Day 9 Masai Mara to Nairobi

Leaving the Masai Mara, we climb up the Rift Valley escarpment for more spectacular views of this ancient ravine which stretches the length of Africa. We return to Nairobi, Kenya's bustling and cosmopolitan capital city, and back to our tented camp in the quieter leafy suburbs of Karen (named after Karen Blixen famous for her novel Out of Africa¬Ě).

Day 10 Bomas of Kenya and Carnivores

This morning a relaxed morning in camp, then after lunch we will visit Bomas of Kenya, to learn a little about the rich culture of the many different Kenyan tribes and view some traditional homesteads. This is followed by a spectacular performance of customary dances and songs from the different ethnic groups. Time to head back to camp and dress up for our end of safari meal at the most renowned restaurant in Kenya, the Carnivore for an amazing meal experience.

A lazy last breakfast and then we will escort you to the airport ready for your flight home.
